Stitch in Time

“Hello,” called Gloria as she trudged up the hill. No answer. The shouts of the kids across the bay seemed loud. It was three steps up onto the lean-to porch. She knocked loudly on the solid pine door then stepped back to wait respectfully. While she waited, she looked up at the underside of the porch roof and noted that a curtain of fiberglass screening that would enclose it, was rolled up and tied in place. It was heavily covered with cobwebs. Plainly nobody had been here since insect season.
Isabel joined her and drew her attention to the wall of the cabin. “That wall is over eight feet high and is made of six logs. They have to be at least eighteen inches thick each – and uniform the whole length. They must be twenty feet long. They are premium logs!” Gloria knocked again and called out. No answer. Isabel went over to peer in the row of four windows that spanned the front wall. There were no curtains. “Nobody home,” she announced.
