The Creative Impulse: Exploring the Innate Drive to Create Art

a person making a handwritten letter

March 27. 2024-The impulse to create art, to write, to compose, and to perform is deeply ingrained in the human experience and stems from a combination of innate traits and environmental influences. While not everyone may pursue artistic endeavors in the same way, the drive to create and appreciate art is a fundamental aspect of being human. Here’s why people are born with a propensity to create art:

  1. Expression of Emotion and Experience: Art, including writing, provides a means to express complex emotions, thoughts, and experiences that may be difficult to articulate through spoken language alone. Through creative expression, people can explore and make sense of their innermost feelings, forging connections with themselves and others.
  2. Communication and Connection: Art serves as a universal language that transcends cultural, linguistic, and geographical boundaries. Whether through storytelling, poetry, or visual mediums, art enables people to communicate ideas, beliefs, and values, fostering empathy, understanding, and connection among diverse individuals and communities.
  3. Exploration and Creativity: The act of creating art, whether writing a novel, painting a masterpiece, or composing music, stimulates the imagination and encourages innovative thinking. It allows us to explore new ideas, experiment with different perspectives, and push the boundaries of conventional wisdom, leading to personal growth and intellectual enrichment.
  4. Catharsis and Healing: Engaging in artistic activities, such as writing, painting, or playing music, can be a therapeutic outlet for processing trauma, managing stress, and promoting psychological well-being. Artistic expression provides a safe space for self-reflection, catharsis, and emotional release, offering solace and healing.
  5. Preservation of Culture and Identity: Throughout history, art has played a vital role in preserving cultural heritage, traditions, and collective memory. Writing, in particular, serves as a medium for documenting historical events, oral traditions, and societal norms, ensuring that the legacy of past generations is passed down to future ones.
  6. Sense of Purpose and Fulfillment: For many of us, the act of creating art, whether as a hobby or a profession, provides a sense of purpose, fulfillment, and meaning in life. It allows us to tap into our unique talents, passions, and creative potential, leading to a deeper sense of self-awareness and satisfaction.
  7. Inspiration and Influence: Art has the power to inspire, motivate, and provoke change. Through storytelling, writing has the ability to challenge prevailing ideologies, raise awareness about social issues, and inspire action toward positive societal transformation. As such, artists, including writers, often serve as catalysts for cultural, political, and intellectual movements.

Simply put, art not only enriches individual lives but also contributes to the collective tapestry of human experience, fostering empathy, understanding, and connection across diverse cultures and generations. What are you creating today? And what legacy are you leaving through your art?

Crafting Magic: A Guide to Structuring Children’s Books

March 21, 2024– Whether you’re an aspiring author or experienced storyteller, understanding the structure of a children’s book is essential for creating stories that connect with young audiences. Today, we’ll explore the fundamentals off structuring a children’s book:

1. Define Your Audience: Before diving into the structure of your children’s book, it’s essential to identify your target audience. Children’s literature spans a wide range of age groups, from toddlers to mid-grade novels, each with distinct reading abilities and interests. Determine the age group you’re writing for, as this will influence the complexity of your story, the word count, and the themes you explore.

2. Establish the Theme and Message: Every children’s book carries a central theme or message. Whether it’s friendship, courage, adventure, or empathy, your story should convey a meaningful takeaway that engages and inspires children. Remember that we never preach to kids (we aren’t their parents) and your messaging shouldn’t come across as heavy handed.

3. Craft a Great Plot: A well-structured plot forms the backbone of any children’s book, guiding readers through a journey filled with excitement, adventure, and discovery. Begin by outlining the key events of your story, including the introduction of characters, the development of conflict, and the resolution of challenges. Keep the pacing dynamic to maintain the reader’s interest, and incorporate elements of suspense and surprise to keep them eagerly turning the pages.

4. Create Memorable Characters: Characters are the heart of any children’s book, so be sure to create characters that are vibrant, diverse, and multidimensional, each with their own unique personalities, quirks, and motivations. Ensure that your protagonist faces challenges that speak to your target audience, allowing children to see themselves reflected in the characters they encounter. Kids can’t be what they can’t see is a saying I heard years ago at a Children’s Book Writing Conference and it’s stuck with me ever since!

5. Consider Text and Illustrations: Children’s books have a combination of text and illustrations, each complementing the other to create a rich and immersive reading experience. The illustrations should fill in the blanks of what you don’t have time to say in your text.

6. Pay Attention to Length and Structure: Children’s books come in various formats and lengths, depending on the target age group and genre. Picture books feature shorter texts with vivid illustrations, making them ideal for younger readers. Early chapter books and middle-grade novels offer longer narratives with chapters that allow for more complex storytelling. Tailor the length and structure of your book to suit the reading abilities and attention spans of your intended audience.

7. Wrap It Up With a Bow: Every children’s book should finish with a satisfying resolution that ties up loose ends. Ensure that your ending reinforces the story’s theme or message, leaving a lasting impression on young minds. Consider incorporating a sense of hope, triumph, or possibility to inspire readers and encourage them to embark on their own adventures of imagination.

Rising Above Criticism: Staying Focused on Your Writing Journey

woman in purple long sleeves pondering on what to write

March 19, 2024- As an aspiring author, the journey of writing a book is both rewarding and challenging. You pour your creativity and passion onto the pages and are proud of what you’re creating.  Amidst the excitement of it all, there may come moments of doubt and criticism, especially when faced with feedback from those who may not fully understand the process. In these moments, it’s crucial to stay resilient and focused on your vision. Let’s explore how to navigate criticism, particularly from those who may not grasp your creative process.

1. Recognize the Source: When receiving criticism, it’s essential to consider the source. Not everyone will understand the dedication and effort required to write a book. Some people may offer well-intentioned feedback, while others may not realize the complexities of the writing process. Understanding where the criticism is coming from can help you put things into context and determine the validity of the criticism. I’ve always said this, and I’ll say it again, never take advice from someone who isn’t doing better than you.

2. Trust Your Creative Vision: As the author, you possess a unique creative vision that drives your storytelling. Trust in your instincts and the story you’re passionate about telling. Remember that writing is a subjective art form, and not everyone will resonate with your work in its early stages. Stay true to your vision and let it guide you.

3. Embrace Constructive Feedback: While harsh criticism can be disheartening, there may still be nuggets of constructive feedback within it. Learn to separate constructive criticism from negativity and use it to strengthen your writing. Consider the underlying intentions behind the feedback and evaluate whether it aligns with your goals for the manuscript. Embracing constructive feedback can lead to growth and improvement as a writer.

4. Set Boundaries: It’s essential to set boundaries when receiving criticism, especially from those who aren’t writers or artists. Politely but firmly assert your boundaries and communicate your needs as an author. Let others know that while feedback is appreciated, it should be constructive and respectful of your work. Surround yourself with those who support and uplift you on your writing journey.

5. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection: Writing a book is a journey filled with highs and lows, victories and setbacks. We know that perfection isn’t the first draft, but focus on making progress and refining your story over time. Understand that the first draft is just that—a draft—and it’s natural for it to undergo revisions and improvements. Keep your eyes on the ultimate goal of bringing your vision to life, despite any criticism along the way.

6. Find Supportive Communities: Surround yourself with supportive communities of fellow writers who understand the challenges of the creative process. Join writing groups, attend workshops, and engage with online forums where you can share experiences, receive encouragement, and exchange feedback in a positive environment. Having a supportive community can provide the motivation and validation needed.

Keep writing, keep creating, and let your passion illuminate the path ahead. X LLB

Unique Romance Novel Marketing Strategies

three pink rose flowers on opened book

February 23, 2024– In the competitive world of book marketing, standing out is key – and for romance authors, this is no exception. Crafting an entrancing romance novel is just the beginning; getting it into the hands of eager readers requires a strategic approach. Let’s explore practical and innovative marketing strategies tailored specifically for romance novels.

  1. Create Interactive Content: Develop an interactive online experience related to your novel’s theme or setting. For example, if your romance novel is set in a charming small town, create a virtual tour of the town on your website or social media channels (Tiktokers do this so impressively!). Include interactive elements such as quizzes, polls, and interactive maps that allow readers to explore the town and engage with the story’s world.
  2. Host a Virtual Book Club with the Author: Organize a virtual book club event where readers can discuss your novel with you, the author. Use Zoom or Google Meet to host the event and encourage participants to share their thoughts, ask questions, and connect with fellow readers. Offer exclusive insights into your writing process, character development, and behind-the-scenes stories to make the event memorable and engaging.
  3. Collaborate with Romance Bookstagrammers: Partner with popular romance bookstagrammers (Instagram) and BookTok-ers (TikTok) to promote your novel. Send them advance copies of your book or digital ARC (Advance Reader Copies) in exchange for honest reviews and promotional posts.
  4. Create a Multimedia Experience: Enhance your readers’ experience by incorporating multimedia elements such as music playlists, mood boards, and visual art inspired by your novel. Curate a playlist featuring songs that evoke the mood and emotions of your romance story, share aesthetic mood boards on Pinterest or Instagram, and encourage readers to interact with these multimedia elements and share their own creations using a branded hashtag that’s the title of your book for example.
  5. Offer Personalized Romance Packages: Create personalized romance packages tailored to different reader preferences and relationship statuses. For example, offer a “Date Night” package with a copy of your novel, gourmet chocolates, scented candles, and a romantic playlist, or a “Self-Love” package with a signed book, bath bombs, herbal teas, and a journal for self-reflection. Promote these packages on your website and social media platforms as unique gifts for Valentine’s Day, anniversaries, or special occasions.
  6. Themed Events: Collaborate with a romantic restaurant to host a themed dinner event inspired by your novel. The menu can feature dishes mentioned in the book or be curated to match the ambiance and setting of the story. See if they would offer a “book and dinner” package where customers receive a copy of your novel when they order the themed dinner. Partner with specialty boutiques to organize a book launch or author signing event and customers can order the book and dinner package that includes a copy of your novel. The boutique can provide a perfect backdrop for the event and offer discounts or giveaways to attendees. Offer exclusive promotions or discounts to customers who purchase your novel at participating boutique stores. This could include a special gift with purchase such as a bonus item like a digital download or exclusive content.

By implementing these creative book marketing strategies, you can engage your target audience, generate excitement for your romance novel, and differentiate yourself in a crowded market. Tailor these ideas to fit your novel’s unique premise, tone, and audience demographics for maximum impact.

It Depends…

February 13, 2024-I get a lot of emails that ask the same question, “How long will it take for…” fill in the blank with *to become a best seller *to make money from my book *to get interviews on the news or on podcasts *for influencers/collaborators/joint ventures/organizations to want to partner with me, etc. The list of questions may go on and on, but my answer is always the same, “It depends on you.” I’m not saying that things don’t take time or that you don’t need to be patient, but I AM saying the harder you work, the “luckier” you get. With clarity, focus, and persistence, you can achieve anything. And I know what you’re going to say, *There are only so many hours in a day, *I’ve already tried that, * Life keeps getting in the way of my writing goals. *Finding time to focus on my writing is a constant struggle. *The publishing industry is so competitive, and it feels like my chances of success are slim. *It’s hard to stand out and get noticed among all the other aspiring authors. etc.

All of the above responses are true, but guess what? There are people that reach their goals (whatever they may be) and overcome obstacles every minute of the day to achieve their dreams. And you can too! At the beginning of the year, I sat down and examined my own goals and what I will achieve over the course of the next 12 months. Then I looked at how much time I have each day and with those hours, I focused on one goal at a time until I achieved it (you can do this too or you can set a time limit of two weeks, 1 month, 6 months, a year etc.) and then I move onto the next thing. I don’t move onto the next item on my list until I’ve exhausted every option and have taken massive action to make the goal a reality. For example, I wanted to learn a very specific skill, so I signed up for classes, courses, practiced at the range for at least a couple of hours each day, read books, watched videos, worked on my stance, learned safety, learned how to use specific components, and I talked to experts in the field and asked for advice and recommendations. I’m not an expert by any means, but I reached that goal that I set for myself so far. My goals are both personal and professional and I’ve used this specific method for both:

  1. Be clear. The old saying is, “You can’t hit a target that you can’t see” and it’s true. If you don’t know what you want, how are you ever going to get it? Write down the goals you will achieve today, this week, this month, and this year. Time is like a vacuum and however long you give yourself is what you’ll use. E.g., if you give yourself 1 week to get organized, you’ll take one week to do it. If you give yourself 3 hours, that’s how long it will take. You get the point. Be realistic-don’t give yourself too much, or too little time!
  2. Figure out how much time you have each day. Write down how many hours you work, how many hours you sleep, all of the activities that take up your time and how much time they take! E.g., Work is 8 hours, sleep is 8 hours that’s 16 hours out of 24 leaving you with 8 hours left. Even if you can only devote 15 minutes to your writing/marketing goals, do it! It will be worth it and the point is to keep moving forward each day. A little consistent progress adds up to a lot!
  3. Focus on one thing at a time. Too many things at once can be really overwhelming, so by focusing on one goal at a time, you’ll fare much better. We all know that multi-tasking is extremely inefficient and just prolongs the process. Picture this, you answer an email, then you do some edits, then you work on another project, then you work on marketing and then you go back to emails…not very productive as now you have a whole bunch of loose ends to deal with. E.g., if you have 15 minutes to spare during your day choose one goal to chip away at, for example, you want to finish writing the first chapter of your novel.
  4. Remember this. I struggle with this part a lot—when things don’t go to plan, stay calm and begin again. Sometimes there are so many delays, demands on your time, and unexpected things and people that can derail your day. Often, there’s nothing we can do about it except go with the flow, and I know that’s hard to do, especially when you have so much that you want to accomplish. Each day, each hour, each minute is a new opportunity to readjust yourself and get back on track to achieving your goals. But no matter what, promise yourself that you won’t give up. Keep going! You owe it to yourself to reach your dreams.

Write down your goals, find out how much time per day you have to achieve them, focus on one goal at a time and chip away at it, and most importantly, don’t give up. Do this each day for a year and watch your life transform in to what you want it to be! Here’s a template you can use to help you organize your goals:

Why do books for children center around animals?

Have you ever wondered why so many kid’s books feature animals? I’m so thrilled to have my article featured in Local Paws Magazine! I hope you’ll check it out here: https://localpaws.ca/2023/03/15/pandamonium-publishing-house/
Be sure to read all of the other great articles in the magazine too! Lots of informative stuff that’s great for pet owners and animal lovers.

Why books for children centre around animals

Informative Articles

If you have kids, you probably have bookshelves full of stories that center around animals, but do you know why authors choose to feature animals as main characters and what children stand to gain from this?

As a publisher whose collection for kids features a ton of different animals, it’s been my experience that authors and illustrators love creating animal-based characters because they are universal, familiar, and comforting to most of the population. This is especially true for children because animals are a constant, stable image that change far less rapidly in time than people do. Books that feature anthropomorphic creatures as main characters help teach children important lessons of empathy, love, teamwork, problem-solving, and acceptance without being heavy-handed or preachy.

Why do we so often transform animals in children’s books? It may seem strange to some, but anthropomorphism and transmogrification have been part of storytelling for as long as humans have been telling stories. Anthropomorphism is a useful device, allowing readers to use their own experiences to connect with the characters and themes in a story.

The importance of animals in children’s books offers a survey of the changing representations of animals in the world of children’s literature, from their earliest appearance as symbols to their present function as characters within the stories themselves. Animals in children’s literature play an important role in the lives of children and their parents and guardians. Children use them as a vehicle to engage meaningfully with their environment, to gain perspective on the world around them, and ultimately to develop confidence in their ability to cope with challenges.

Children’s assumed familiarity with pets and animals can help them understand the chaotic, ever-changing world around them in a gentle, non-threatening way and can soften complex issues that books explore, such as death, divorce, illness, and bullying, as examples. Additionally, studies show many benefits when children read to animals, such as no fear of judgment if they make a mistake and an increased willingness to try again if they stumble over a word.

Reading is one of the most fundamental skills that children learn. It helps them develop essential literacy skills, and it helps them learn how to understand their world. Reading can also help children develop compassion, imagination, and a love of learning. But reading can be difficult for kids who have trouble focusing on an activity for long periods of time. This is where animals come in! Reading to an animal or cuddling with an animal while reading show an increase in engagement for children. Reading aloud to a beloved pet has been shown to increase reading comprehension by up to 30%. Cuddling with animals also expands relaxation and lowers stress levels, which can help keep kids focused on their books for longer amounts of time.

And if that wasn’t enough, benefits from cuddling with animals while reading also leads kids to take an interest in an animal species! Children who are interested in animals will want to learn more about them, which gives parents the opportunity to talk with kids about conservation efforts or what they’re doing to help protect wildlife in their area, and they will seek out books that fill those needs.

As the world has grown to discover the needs of children and what makes them happy, books have become one of the key tools in discovering children’s learning and development. As children grow, so do their interests in the world around them, expanding from toys and friends to animals, the environment, and people different from themselves.

We all have the responsibility to take care of and preserve our world and the animals that live in it. Through children’s books, we can teach kids the importance of taking care of animals and preserving their habitats and natural resources. They can also learn about possible careers based around animals as well as our interconnectedness with each other as humans and other creatures on this planet.
