Daily Challenge for Authors

October 27, 2021– Is there such thing as a perfect day? Or does perfection not exist? I think that many days in my life have been perfect so far and that there’s a common theme that makes them this way; I get to spend the day doing what I want with who I want. It’s as simple as that for me!

Sleeping in, writing, great coffee, cuddling the cats, hiking with Mike and Luna, exploring new places, watching old movies, reading, and playing board games, are some things that my perfect day includes. What are yours?

For today’s writing challenge, I want you to write a 1000-word short story about your perfect day or your idea of an ideal day and what that consists of. I like this challenge because it’s so personal and lets us see how much we have to be thankful for and that it’s the little things that matter. Notice how none of the items on my list cost money? They say the best things in life are free-I agree.

Writing Prompt Challenge

October 26, 2021– Today, we have a super fun challenge for you! We’ve done new writing prompt challenges for almost an entire month, and we sure hope you’ve enjoyed them. Some have been more difficult than others; nonetheless, I hope you come away with something after this month’s theme is complete. Today’s photo may be seen as simple, but I think this will be a challenge for lots of folks.

Here are the instructions for today:

Write a 1500 word short story in the third person narrative in the fantasy genre.

Third-person narrative: The Merriam Webster dictionary defines third–person narrative as ” a writing style that uses a set of words or forms (such as pronouns or verb forms) that refer to people or things that the speaker or writer is not addressing directly. He, she, it, they tell the story from that perspective or point of view.

Fantasy genre: Fantasy is a genre of speculative fiction set in a fictional universe, often inspired by real-world myth and folklore.

Writing Challenge of the Day!

October 22, 2021– Have you picked out your Halloween costume yet? We have! We can’t wait to facetime with the kids and see their costumes too. Halloween is my most favourite day of the year, and I think it’s because it’s the chance to play with outrageous makeup, dress up, and take on an entirely new persona.

There’s a quote that says, “Give a man a mask, and he becomes his true self.” I think the Joker said that, but the original (similar) quote was by Oscar Wilde. What does hiding behind a mask do for our true selves? I’m not talking about pandemic masks; I’m talking about the masks that we show the world on a daily basis. Do people ever know who we really are? Or are we only showing them who we want them to think we are? Why do we do this? Perhaps it’s a protective response-we don’t want to give too much of ourselves away, or maybe it’s because we don’t know who we are to begin with? Everyone has their own answer.

A couple of years ago, I was fortunate enough to be in New York City for work, and I decided to see a play. I chose Phantom of the Opera at the Majestic Theatre and excitedly took my seat before the show started. I had a few minutes to absorb the magnificent surroundings and take it all in. It was absolutely stunning! Then internal dialogue took over as I stared at the mask on the playbill; hidden identity, obsession, torture, longing, and injustice were all words that came to mind. For today’s challenge, I’m asking you to do the same.

Look at the photo prompt above and write down all of the words that come to mind, be careful not to edit your stream of thought; get the words on the page. After that, write a short story or poem using all of the words. It can be as long or as short as you’d like.

Photo Challenge for Authors

October 7, 2021– I hope you’re enjoying our theme this month which is meant to stretch you out of your writing comfort zone! We’re posting a photo each day with instructions so that you can get the most out of the exercises and continue to hone your craft.

Today’s assignment: Write a 50-word rhyming poem using the photo above. A simple photo with so much potential.

I think that it’s incredibly challenging to rhyme well, and the objective of this assignment is to show you how difficult it is. We discourage rhyming prose in children’s books (99% of the time) because it can’t be done to perfection. We find that authors make up words to fit the rhyme rather than focus on the story and character development/confict resolution.

October 4 Writing Prompt

October 4, 2021– Depending on where you live and in what country, continent, city, province, or state you’re in, the weather changes from place to place.  I remember as a kid seeing a huge raincloud over the neighbour’s house, but it was sunny over ours…such a cool phenomenon! During our theme this month which is photo writing prompts, you’re not only going to see picturesque landscapes with orange, yellow, and red leaves based on the season, but you’re also going to get photo prompts that challenge you as a writer.  Not everyone is experiencing the same October as you are, and I want to be mindful of that in the photos I choose.

The point of photo writing prompts is to stretch us out of our comfort zones as writers and to allow us to explore the depths of our imaginations. For today’s prompt, I urge you to sit with it for a while, let it speak to you. If you continue to participate in this October Photo Prompt Challenge, you should have enough short stories for a complete anthology by the end of it.

Today’s challenge– Write a third-person account of the photo above. Use 2000 words and incorporate all five senses.  Happy writing! X LLB

October is Here! (and so is our next theme)

October 1, 2021– I’m so excited that October is here because it’s the most wonderful time of the year to me! It’s that much closer to Halloween and that’s my favourite day, it’s like Christmas! This month we’re going to focus on writing prompts so that you can continue to hone your craft. Writing prompts are great because they open up our minds and stretch our imaginations and sometimes allow us to escape our comfort zone by writing out of our genre. This is going to be a really great month and I’m so excited that you’ll be joining us!

Here is the writing prompt for today: Using the photo above, write a 1200 word short story in the cozy romance genre.  Definition of “cozy romance” according to the Huffington Post: Cozies are fun to read. There’s a formula to the cozies that work very well drawing readers back again and again. The amateurs in such stories are nearly always well educated, intuitive women. Books, especially in series form usually have the story line relate to the detective’s job or hobby. Murderers in cozy mysteries are generally intelligent, rational, articulate people, and murders are pretty much bloodless and neat. Violence and sex are low-key and supporting background characters bring comic relief to the story. Some cozy series are set during holidays such as Valentine’s Day or Christmas making them more intimate to the reader.
