Authors, Your Readers Want to See YOU!

I tell my authors this all the time, “No one is here to see the publisher, they’re here to see you!” Readers want to connect with you and ask you questions that only you can answer such as, “What was your inspiration for writing your book?” “What’s the story behind the story?” “How did you become an author?” That’s why it’s essential that you communicate effectively with your readers, so that you can both feel connected. Here’s how you can do that:

Define your target audience: Identify the audience for your book, including their age, interests, and reading habits. This will help you understand and participate in marketing efforts to reach the people most likely to buy and enjoy your book. It’s important to know who you wrote your book for! Connecting with your tribe of like-minded readers is the most effective way to sell your book.

Develop a brand: Establish a clear and consistent brand for yourself as an author. This should include your marketing materials and message, colours and content on your website, your social media, and overall aesthetic that reflects your writing style and genre.

Build an online presence: Set up a website and social media accounts to promote your book and connect with readers. Share updates, teasers, and other content related to your book on these platforms to generate interest and build your audience. Hosting live Q&A sessions on social media, links to you website and YouTube channel, and regular, consistent posting, helps readers get to know and trust you.

Reach out to influencers: Identify influencers and bloggers who have an audience that matches your target audience. Reach out to them to see if they would be interested in reading and reviewing your book or featuring it on their platforms. We never pay for reviews!

Participate in book events: Participate in book fairs, signings, and other events where you can connect with readers and promote your book. Partner with local bookstores to arrange book signings and other events as well as schools, libraries, independent bookstores, and other events and places in your community.

Connect with book clubs: Reach out to local book clubs or online groups focused on your genre to promote your book and offer author Q&A sessions. See if you can do a visit or a free talk to discuss your book, the themes, and why you decided to write your story.

Monitor and adjust your strategy: Regularly monitor your marketing efforts and adjust your strategy as needed. Keep track of what’s working and what’s not, and make changes accordingly. Marketing is all about pivoting and remember that people buy YOU first, then they buy your book!

Amazon author page: Do you have an Amazon author page? If not, you should! This is where readers can find out more about you, your work, and where to find additional titles that you’ve written.

By following these steps and tailoring your marketing plan to your book and target audience, you can build a strong presence as an author and promote your book effectively while connecting with readers.
